Application Process

We've all heard the stories. I recoated my roof, and within a few months, it started leaking again—or worse, the coatings lifted. Get the right product the first time and avoid paying thousands for a new roof—get the same benefits for a fraction of the cost with RvRoofMagic.

SIMPLY RECOAT AND ADD YEARS OF SERVICE LIFE TO YOUR RV!

Substrate to be coated MUST be dry. Once applied, the product can handle a light rain after three hours, assuming temps are above 50 degrees. If any moisture is present upon application, there will be blistering.

Roof Preparation and Application Process

We suggest performing an inspection of your roof. Look for any separations in seams. Also, around your joints, AC’s and vents, check for any loose caulk or areas where caulk may be needed. Our butyl MX caulk has been field tested to be compatible with our RvRoofMagic, so it will not void the warranty. Be sure any silicone caulk currently on the roof is replaced with the butyl MX caulk.

A light power wash, if you have one, is great. Otherwise, use a good bristle brush. The roof must be clean, dry and free of any oil, grease, dirt or loosely adhered coating. Surface should be cleaned with Roof Protect to ensure proper adhesion. We suggest our Roof Protect to thoroughly clean your roof. It was field-tested to be compatible with RvRoofMagic and provides an intense cleaning vs. standard cleaners, and is required for the warranty. Roof Protect emulsifies contaminates and provides improved surface preparation by effectively removing oil, grease, mildew, dirt, and other soils from your roofing membrane. It also has a built in mildewcide to kill any living mold spores on your roof prior to application of the RvRoofMagic.

Maintenance: You should also use Roof Protect annually to further protect your roof, allowing dirt and grease etc. to be removed, further extending your roof service life.

Best Rollers and Methods for Application

RvRoofMagic is applied at approximately 50 sq. ft per gallon. The easiest way to accomplish this is to chalk off your roof into 5 X 10 areas. Once you are done filling in one of those areas, you should be finished with a gallon of RvRoofMagic. Be sure your roof is perfectly dry before application. Many customers will tape off their roof with blue painter’s tape to avoid any possible running. RvRoofMagic is ready to use; thinning is not required. Mix for approximately five minutes with an electric drill mixer to allow the solvent to be distributed. Application of the product is with a medium nap roller (3/8 inch) (not a foam roller), and chip brush around corners and vertical surfaces.

Maximize Lifespan with Proper Drying

The product has a five-year shelf life as long as you affix the lid properly, so air does not get in. Average dry time: Dry to touch in 3 – 4 hours until a light rain can get on it. Wait 48-72 hours before traveling, depending on daytime drying temperatures. Should you choose to apply a second coat, wait until the first coat is fully dry. Rain should not be forecast for the day you use the product. However, if very light rain falls within 2-3 hours of application, the roof is already protected. You may see rain dimples on the surface, depending on the strength of the rain. If seams are not properly adhered, it may cause the tape to bubble up or raise, as will a rubber roof that has lost adhesion to the wood substrate. Applying the product too thickly will cause it to wrinkle. Keep in mind the surface temperature must be under 140°F during application.

FOR CUSTOMERS WITH EPDM ROOFS ONLY

Depending on the age and condition of your EPDM roof, some customers may notice slight bubbling. This is a temporary aesthetic effect, and the product will self-level as the solvent evaporates to the surface.

To help prevent bubbling during the drying process (though it’s not required), you can apply a “flash coat” of RV Roof Magic. This is a very light coat, approximately 1.5 gallons for 200 square feet. The remaining product will be enough for your main coat. The flash coat does not require purchasing additional RV Roof Magic.

If the flash coat is applied too thick, it may cause temporary bubbling. We recommend allowing a minimum of 3-4 hours of dry time (depending on temperature) before proceeding with the main coat. Cooler temperatures or high humidity may extend drying times. The flash coat should be completely dry before applying the final coat.

After September, we suggest waiting at least 36 hours between the flash coat and main coat due to environmental conditions. Cooler ambient air temperatures and high dew points will slow down the curing process.

Important Notes:
  • This product is designed for outdoor use. If applying indoors, you must use a NIOSH-approved respirator, available at Home Depot or Uline.
  • As the product dries, any brush or roller marks will disappear, leaving a seamless finish. It will look as if someone installed a custom-fit membrane just for your RV.
  • Application is simple: Apply today, drive away tomorrow, it’s that easy!
  • Clean-up is easy with Xylene, available at any paint store.
  • The product has a five-year shelf life when stored properly with the lid securely sealed.
